AOL also blocks known phishing Websites, and offers a wide range of tools and tips to help users identify and avoid online ‘phishing’ schemes designed to lure people into giving out personal or financial information. To help prevent people from falling for scams contained in spam emails, AOL offers tools such as the “Report Spam” button on Web Mail and through its downloadable email software. Spam reports from millions of AOL users and several Internet-monitoring firms help AOL block and fight spam. AOL also posts the top five phishing scams currently targeting AOL users each month at safety.aol.com.

Be Suspicious. Be suspicious of any urgent requests for personal information. Remember that legitimate companies do not and will not ask you to update any kind of sensitive personal information via email or instant message.
Keep your personal information PERSONAL. Be extra careful when it comes to sharing any personal or financial information online. Never provide sensitive information like your address, bank account number or credit card number via e-mail or instant message – even if the email requesting it looks like it came from your bank or credit card company.
Think before you click. Even if a request for information looks legitimate, don’t click the links in the e-mail to visit the Web site for more information. Scammers can disguise links to look like they’re taking you to a real site, when they’re actually taking you to a scam site. This can give them access to your computer and any personal information stored on it.
Only download attachments from people you know. If you’re at all unsure of where or who the email came from, don’t click on attachments and avoid downloading information.
Protect yourself and your computer. Install and run anti-virus software, spyware protection, and a firewall. And make sure your email address is affiliated with a trusted source. Companies like AOL who have a long history of offering email services, offer additional protection from scammers. AOL blocks more than 1.5 billion pieces of spam every day before it reaches users and blocked 570 billion spam emails in 2007.
