Fact or Fiction: Liquid diets are best?

FICTION! Liquid diets include either partial meal replacement or total fluid consumption in various forms, and are NOT suitable for long term use. They do not provide all of the nutrients and energy needed for optimal health, specifically they lack protein and fiber. While short term weight loss may occur, it is most often not maintained in the long run. Liquid diets most often set people up for the “yo yo” dieting syndrome!

Fact or Fiction: Sleep and weight are related?

FACT! How much you sleep AND the quality of your sleep may actually be linked to your appetite! When you don’t sleep enough, the levels of the hormone that tells the brain when you’re full (leptin) drop. Lack of sleep also causes appetite stimulating hormone (ghrelin) to rise. The two, combined hormonal responses may cause weight gain when you aren’t getting adequate sleep! Sufficient sleep patterns also reduce the amount of cortisol we produce, and when we are sleep deprived, cortisol levels rise. This is important as well because cortisol has an effect on our appetites, and increased levels can make us feel hungry, even when we just ate! Cortisol also raises blood sugar and insulin levels which may result in increased abdominal fat deposition.

Fact or Fiction: Eating unlimited amounts of raspberries is good for you because they are high in fiber?FICTION! Raspberries are a good source of fiber, and one cup of them contains about 8 grams. They are also an excellent source of Vitamin C and also contain calcium, iron, magnesium and potassium. However, raspberries do contain calories (63 calories in a cup) and should not be unlimited. A healthy diet includes a variety of foods from all of the different food groups.

Fact or Fiction: Is snacking good for you?

FACT! Snacking keeps your metabolism revved, keeps blood sugar levels stable, and keeps your energy up. Snacking also helps you make healthy food choices, and helps with portion control. Eating nutrient dense snacks throughout the day (right proportion of protein, fiber, and healthy fat) is the key to a healthy diet. Always be prepared with snacks to throw in your car, in your bag or to keep at the office.
