Nov. 15: OOO La La!

November 15, 2007

I’m really looking forward to tomorrow’s show, but before I tell you about it, a little wrap-up of today’s…

My mom and longtime family friend Cecile were in the audience, which kind of throws me off, I have to admit. I try not to look at my mom because although she is very supportive, she’s also quite opinionated. And deservedly so; she spent many years in this biz and I trust her critiques of my performance implicitly. Although she’s also pretty adept at critiquing my “look” (clothes, hair, makeup, shoes) — she’s pretty happy about all that now because she’s a huge fan of our stylist, Felix. He is a wonder-boy.

A highlight of the show had to be hip-hop star Eve and burlesque queen Dita Von Teese. Let’s start with Eve. She was very friendly! Some of her songs make her seem a little tough, but in person she’s really cool. I felt like she would have been quite open to talk about her life had she not been there to focus on MAC and their fight against AIDS. During the commercial break, I asked her about Gwen Stefani (a.k.a. my idol) and whether they’ve stayed good friends after their duet a few years back. (“Let Me Blow Your Mind”) She said they don’t really call each other but when they run into each other here and there, they’re always like “heyyyyy!!!!!”; clearly good friends. She also said, unlike her, Gwen is the bubbliest girl in the world, pretty much all the time. She said when they were working on a video together, Eve would be complaining about how crappy things were, how late it was, how cold she was and Gwen would step in and say “It’s ok! Look at all these other people (presumably the crew)! They’ve got it so much worse than us!” I thought that was a cute story…….

Dita Von Teese was FASCINATING to me. She is very demure! She really is a walking contradiction because on one hand, she’s a burlesque star; she strips down to nothing while posing on the tops of larger-than-life champagne glasses, or giant lipstick tubes or whatever, but yet in person, she oozes femininity and class. Her outfit was staid; her hair was just-so. Her makeup was totally perfect. Even her lip-liner was military-straight. When we sat chatting during the break, she sat perfectly poised and spoke so articulately! I would have loved to get into her life story more as well but we really didn’t have a lot of time, unfortunately. Trust me, we’d do so much more if we could with these celebrities, but we just can’t because of timing issues.

The Relationship 101 segment was a crackup today. We’ll be having them on a lot more, I’m guessing. I thought they had a good vibe together. I have asked my boyfriend’s about their “past” (THAT past…) and up until recently, I wasn’t too keen on actually hearing the truth. Maybe I’m getting older or more mature (probably the former) but I’m not overreacting when I hear the answer these days. As I said on the show, I’d rather they sow their wild oats and get all the craziness out of their system before they settle in with me. Our male guest made a great point when he said “ok, but what if your boyfriend tells you he’s slept with 100 girls in NYC? After that, wouldn’t you be wondering every time a girl walked up and said hi to him?”

Yes, that’s a great point. Of course, I always raise the eyebrow when any girl walks up to my boyfriend now, isn’t that just a girl thing? Or am I the only one that assumes that every single one of his girl friends that I don’t know has been interested in him at one time? I’m crazy, and that just proved the point.

And lordy! Telling me which kind of girl is your kind of girl?!?!? No, no, no! Just walk away, Doug…walk away…Keep that a secret till your grave, baby!

Tomorrow’s show starts off with another rousing edition of “The Verdict,” with Geraldo and Jeanine. Then we have unearthed the answer to the question: How do I make sure I secure a second date after a first date?

Then…I know a lot of you reading this have no plans on coming to NYC to see a Broadway show, but if you do, make sure you consider “Young Frankenstein,” starring Peter Bart and Megan Mullaly (from “Will and Grace”). I have to admit, I am much more of a fan of the iconic musicals, like “West Side Story” or “Evita” or “A Chorus Line”. I feel like a lot of the contemporary musicals I’ve seen in recent years have been way too corny or they go for the obvious jokes and aren’t very clever at all.

I saw “Young Frankenstein” yesterday and I liked it a lot. It’s received some slams from critics who say it’s too dirty, not as funny as the original movie, etc. First, I clearly don’t have a problem with sexual humor so the whole “it’s too dirty” thing doesn’t factor with me. It isn’t as funny as the original movie, but then again the original movie wouldn’t play as well today anyway. This is a cute show and I recommend it. The cast is sick, meaning great. They’re all really talented performers so if you’re not amazed with the actual show itself, you at least can marvel at the great actors and the set design.

Honestly, after many of the numbers, audience members who clearly are Broadway aficionados were saying “Bravo!” and “Excellent.” I heard that over and over from people behind, in front of and beside me. We’ll be chatting tomorrow on set with Peter Bart who plays Dr. Frankenstein (not the monster but the man who creates him. That apparently has been of some confusion to many commentators).

My weekend countdown has begun, not that I don’t love working. I just truly enjoy the concept of sleeping past 5 a.m. I’m getting all dreamy just thinking about it. I’m heading out of town this weekend for a little romantic getaway which will include a lot of sleep and a lot of food. The place in which I’m going has some serious brunch buffets, and I’m all about overloading my plate and then snoozing the day away. Sounds real romantic, doesn’t it? This place is a jewel in the mountains! I will tell you details when I get back…
