My Engagement Party!
July 23, 2008
Bonjour.
Today started off with minor fireworks between me and some of the producers. I was concerned about our segment on the narcissistic mother; my main worry was about the package (the video that sets up the story); more specifically, about a line in the package. I felt worried that if I read it, I would be blatantly saying our mom, Ellen, loved herself more than she loved her child. I don’t have kids, so I don’t want to seem as though I know everything, but from everything I’ve ever heard, you love your child more than you love yourself. You would step in front of a bullet to save your child.
Well my concerns were alleviated about 15 seconds into the segment when I asked Ellen if she loves herself more than she loves her daughter. After everything we revealed about their contentious bond, saying “YES” would have been…let’s say ‘unfortunate’ if she ever wanted to save their disintegrating relationship.
Well, as you saw, the answer was a resounding YES and thus began one of my favorite segments of all time. It brought out feelings in me (my “that pisses me off” comment might be a good indication), and my friends who were watching who have had ups and downs with their moms. It’s kind of like a normal thing I guess. This situation, however, was the extreme. Prior to the show, we kept the two apart. During the commercial break before the segment, Mike told them to scoot closer on the couch and Ruby, the daughter refused. After the show, Ruby refused to let her mom touch her, and was verrrrrry snarly when her mother addressed her. Supposedly, there were some sparks and loud voices in the green room after the segment, but in the end, the two left together, smiling. Hopefully they can work it out, but with the bitterness so thick you could slice it, I’d venture to say it’ll be a long time.
Sorry for the somewhat crude comment.
Relationship 101 was also one of my favorites of all time. First, our topic was a lightning rod. Secondly, our guests were stellar. Ian is always great and Debbie is so cool. She’s very relatable. She’s like the cool friend who’s been there/done that but always gives you real, blunt advice.
I think men and women are different when it comes to staying close with exes. Ian didn’t say it on camera, but he feels that men will stay communicative with their ex until a new one that captures their heart comes along. I’ve found personally that a lot of the exes that I’ve broken up with (meaning I instigated the ending of the relationship) are not willing to be friends for a long time, until the “wound” or whatever heals.
I have always had a hard time ending things (whether it was me doing it or him doing it) and just going on like you never knew the person. That just seems to cold to me, although in many cases it would’ve probably been smarter for my sanity and my heart.
It’s a weird thing…
And those feet fish! Ugh! Makes me want to throw up. I was so nauseous watching those things that I had to leave the studio. I don’t like pods of things like fish, (schools, yes, I know), bugs, insects…oh GOD it just creeps me out!!!
On a happier note…
Here are a couple pics from my engagement party, thrown by my wonderful bridesmaids and maid of honor. We had a great time. Funny thing is, Doug and I were the old fogies who left at midnight while many of the group stayed on and partied the night away. I’m getting old!

This is my mom, Erica and moi.

Audrey (she’s a writer at Fox News. Look at those blue eyes!), Laura the Hoboken real estate agent and amazing opera singer) and Julie, a politico we affectionately call The Grim Reaper. She’s my maid o’ honor.

The Girls. Audrey will kill me because she looks like she’s drunk but the camera caught her at a bad moment, obviously. Julie, Alicia (another bridesmaid), moi and Laura.

That’s Laura Ingle, a good buddy from Fox News and Julie and Liz Weaver, one of our segment producers on M&J. Laura was so sweet to come because she was having her own party the following night that I had to miss yet she still trekked all the way to the Upper West Side to one of my favorite Mexican restaurants, Rancho, with a bottle of vino for us.

My bro, John John (that’s what my mom and I call him) and my fiancé Doug, also known as Nugget, Lewis, McNugglesworth, Munchers, Lurdles among others. Don’t even ask.
