Happy New Year!
Oh where do I begin!?!?!?
Well luckily I had a bit of a cold New Year’s Eve, so I didn’t overindulge like some of my friends and cohorts did. I was in a car in the Lincoln Tunnel at 12:30 a.m. after celebrating at a couple house parties. I’m a big believer now in laying low at someone’s home. I can’t remember the last time I actually wasn’t working New Year’s Eve, so this year I was actually one of those who fell OFF the “it’s amateur night” bandwagon; I was psyched to get out there and par-tay, as opposed to re-port.
Doug and I started off the night at his friends Mike and Mairen’s house. Well I guess they’re my friends now, too. They just got married — lord you should see this girl’s ROCK. I was like “DAMN GIRL it looks like a satellite!” Good job, Mike. (GREAT job, Mairen wink wink)
Actually, before their house, Doug and I met up with my mom for dinner in the ‘boken,” otherwise known as Hoboken. There’s a great little restaurant called Cucharamama (I can write it but can’t say it unless I’ve had a couple of their Mamaritas; their version of a margarita) — they play Latin music, the food is spicy and the ambience is terrific. Warm and cozy. So after dinner Doug and I headed into the city. We thought, being NYE and all, it would be a nightmare trudging thru the Holland Tunnel into downtown, where M and M live. However, it took 10 minutes. Why do I tell you the specific travel time? Because it meant that we arrived at their apartment right on time, which in New York City terminology means we are dorks.
Mairen’s family was there, adorable little one year old, “Fields” (cute name) was running around in his little red baby New Year outfit. And there Doug and I are, busting in on family time. We tried to spin it like “We’re so cool we arrived fashionably EARLY.” They were all very sweet but I think next year I’ll tell the cab to drive around the city a few more times. The rest of the crew arrived at the normal time which was about an hour after we did.
After M and M’s we went to my best friend Julie’s house in the Village, where we rang in ’08 and ran out so wimpy Juliet could have a better shot at getting rid of her sniffles. Julie just sent me some pics, but I’m not sure if I should post them. Not that I was drunk, but others certainly were.
Christmas was really great this year but in a way, it was also bittersweet. We went to Doug’s Christmas Eve. My friend Rebecca Gomez from the Fox Biz Channel is dating Doug’s cousin Brett, so that was really cool. Brett’s parents had a big, festive bash with all the little kids running around which I really think makes Christmas amazing.
I got a beautiful ring from Doug, no, not THAT kind of ring. I LOVE IT!!!! He in turn got nothing. Well, I got him a massage chair, but on delivery day they informed us that it was too big to fit into his front door so now we’re trying to find one that will actually make it into his casa. I felt really bad but then again, he’ll feel all better once he sits in the chair and drifts off to dreamland.
Christmas Day we headed to my aunt Cookie’s house. It was great, too, although I (and I’m sure a few others) were pretty sad because it’s the first year without my wonderful grandmother Mum Mum. She passed away unexpectedly in October and it’s still pretty damn fresh, I have to say. My grandfather is living in an assisted living facility and actually is enjoying himself — he’s 99 and is one of the only ones not in a walker. I also hear he’s popular with the ladies. He LOVES dancing, but complains that the place doesn’t have a proper dance floor, and carpet just isn’t doing it. I’m telling you — he is amazing. He still walks a few miles each day despite being nearly blind and he does something like 20 sit ups each morning. I’m not kidding. He’ll outlive all of us I have a feeling. He got a little weepy though at dinner, which of course sent me, the biggest blubberer of all time, into a meltdown. Not in front of him, but I did have to get up and walk into another room.
We headed up to Mt. Snow in Vermont to ski for a couple days after Christmas. I realized just as I was clicking my boots into my binders (Is this the right terminology? I have no idea) that I hadn’t skied since 1995. Do you get what I’m saying here? I was YOUNG when I last skied. Now I’m… let’s just say my joints don’t twist and turn as easily which frightens me because I thought I was in pretty good shape.
I fell twice. Doug, bless his little bald head, fell about 200 times (just kidding, but I’m sure it felt that way after his first run) but the following day he kicked my ass so who’s laughing now?
My brother, John and my friends Laura and Tom joined us. Although not on the runs because unlike us, they aren’t slope-ily challenged. We stayed at the Grand Summit Hotel in West Dover, basically right at the foot of Mt. Snow. Great location, cool rooms. Unfortunately check-IN time is 6pm. What?!?!??! We had to wait around all day and waste time (yes, we wasted time in the lodge over beers and fattening foods) so if you’re headed up there, check and make sure you can actually check in!
I came back to NY and was happy to see the issue of Steppin’ Out magazine that I posed for is out and on the stands. They did a really nice job of shooting and I loved the interview – Chaunce Hayden is great. You can check out the pics and interview at so-mag.com.
At this point I usually talk about today’s show but I’m still in vacation mode after writing about it for the past half hour so I think I’ll get workin’ tomorrow. Love you all!
