Happy Friday. I’m heading out on the town tonight for my best buddy, Julie Roginsky’s birthday. She’s turning 25 again, ha-ha. Happy Birthday Julesy!
We had a solid week — although I’m really excited for next week’s shows. On Tuesday, American Idol’s Carly Smithson (who was ROBBED, by the way) will be performing and I really hope she’ll be singing Jesus Christ Superstar, ironically her best — and last — performance. At least, it was my favorite. She seemed to be having such a great time. Here’s my theory — Carly has a mature way about her, and I think that might have been her death knell. I think it’s the same thing with Michael Johns — he was a little older, married and I think the really passionate voters probably skew young. I think they’re probably the two that will do the best post-Idol actually.
Somewhat more shocking than Carly’s demise was the fact that Brooke was not only not kicked off, but wasn’t even in the bottom three. Since it’s a blog, I will be a bit more opinionated about things, so sorry if I’m offending, but as Simon says, “it’s just my opinion.” Honestly, I have grown very irritated by her. She could be the nicest, sweetest girl, and if she is, I’m truly sorry for what I’m about to say. But really, stop with the lower lip biting, gosh-golly stuff. Please. Even if you’re sincere, it’s coming off (to me) as contrived. Apparently it’s not hurting her with the voters, so maybe she shouldn’t be taking any advice but it really feels a bit forced. The whole starting-and-stopping routine is also weird. The first time, when she messed up while playing piano and then started again…ok, there’s your one time only pass. She actually received some plaudits for the move; I believe a few of the judges referred to it as bold and brave. Which I never quite got. But a second time???! Even Paula turned on her. It’s not cute, it’s not bold and it’s not brave — it’s annoying. You’ve had a handful of performances and two of them have included the start/stop. You don’t see the pros doing that, ever. I don’t think I’ve ever been to a concert and seen an entertainer do that. But again, she’s getting votes so maybe it’s working.
David Cook is growing on me, although I still think Michael Johns is better.
As far as who’s going to end up in the top 3, top 2, winner… after some of the latest voter moves, I have no idea.
Also next week — the absolutely gorgeous Padma Lakshmi from Top Chef. She’s a cool chick, and I’m looking forward to seeing her and getting some scoop on this season’s show. Have you ever noticed the large scar on her right arm? It’s from a car accident when she was very young. Her parents were driving, and apparently it was a brutal crash.
A huge favorite of mine is Gordon Ramsey, from Hell’s Kitchen. Oh my GOD that man is brutal, but actually, in person, he’s anything but. He’s quite charming. It’s hard to believe he unleashes like that. He’ll be cooking for us; luckily we won’t be cooking for him.
Some of you have been wondering why Mike and I are doing segments alone a lot more. It’s actually something we talked about doing a while back but recently decided to try out. I think it’s a good move. It allows us to focus a little more on the subject. When Mike and I share a complex interview, we each have our own angle. Sometimes the two different angles work; sometimes they create a little more confusion than necessary. What do you think?
I’m getting ready to head out for a massage. I would love to say it’s going to be relaxing, but I have a really painful crick in my neck and I’m going to need it kneaded out by tonight or I’m not going to have any fun. You might have noticed on today’s show I was a little stiff. I turned to the right during one segment, can’t remember which one it was, maybe The Verdict, and yelped a little because it feels like a knife is being thrust into my neck meat, as Doug likes to call it. Very descriptive, though. You know exactly where I’m talking about, right?
So after tonight’s festivities, I think I’m going to spend the rest of the week catching up on sleep and getting ready for my Cinco de Mayo/Rebecca&Brett Engagement Fiesta. Two themes for one big party — should be interesting. I’m renting a margarita machine; I pray it doesn’t freeze up because this is the highlight of the party. Actually I’m going to have a little surprise for my guests but I’ll tell you guys what it is, post-party. If anyone has any good ideas on how to really amp up a Cinco de Mayo celebration, please pass them on.
Have a great weekend!
